20세기 미국음악사에서 가장 중요한 인물 중 한명인 루이 암스트롱(Louis Armstong)에 대해 현재 미국에서는 윈튼 마샬리스(Wynton Marslis)를 중심으로 그의 업적과 중요성이 다시금 부각되고 있다. 미국을 비롯한 다른 많은 나라에서는 이미 루이 암스트롱에 관련된 많은 서적과 자료를 쉽게 접할 수 있으나 한국에서는 그와 관련된 전문적인 서적 한권도 찾아보기 어려운 상황이다.  이러한 상황에 저자인 장명재는 미국 뉴욕에 있는 루이 암스트롱 기록물 보관소의 디렉터이자 “What a Wonderful World”의 저자이며 미국 전 지역을 다니며 루이암스트롱을 가르치는 리키 리카르디(Ricky Riccardi)의 가르침 아래에서 루이 암스트롱을 깊이 연구하며 그 결과 한국에서는 처음으로 루이 암스트롱의 연주를 모아 놓은 루이 암스트롱 연주곡집을 출판하게 되었다. 이 책은 재즈의 아버지라고 불리는 루이 암스트롱의 연주방법을 모아 재즈에 관심을 가지고 있는 이들이 자신의 악기 실력을 향상할 수 있도록 도움을 주는 책이다. 연주를 위한 책 이후 루이 암스트롱의 많은 에피소드를 담고 있는“루이 암스트롱과 재즈 그리고 삶”이 다음 출판을 준비하고 있고 이 책이 더 기다려지는 이유이다.
